In 1900, R.A. Hadfield and others in England first discovered that Si Fe alloys containing 4% Si4 had good magnetic properties. In 1903, Germany and the United States successively produced hot-rolled silicon steel sheets containing Si1.0-4.5%. In the 1906, low-carbon steel was used to manufacture iron cores for motors and transformers. In 1934, N.P. Goss used a two-stage cold rolling method to produce (110) [001] grain oriented cold-rolled silicon steel sheets containing 3% Si. In 1968, Takeshi Taguchi and others in Japan used a comprehensive inhibitor of manganese sulfide and aluminum nitride, and employed a high reduction rate cold rolling method to produce (110) [001] high magnetic orientation silicon steel. The grain orientation of this material was more accurate, and the iron loss and magnetism were further enhanced. Over the years, there has been a decreasing trend in the iron loss value of silicon steel.
In 1949, cold-rolled (110) oriented thin silicon steel strips with a thickness of less than 0.1mm were produced in the United States and used in the electronics industry. In 1957, the Federal Republic of Germany produced (100) [001] cubic oriented silicon steel sheets, which have high longitudinal and transverse magnetic properties. However, due to the complex process, they were not officially produced until 2021. The magnetostriction of Si Fe alloy containing 6.5% silicon is about zero, with high magnetic permeability, low iron loss, and noise free transformers. However, due to processing difficulties, it has not been widely used. In the 1970s, liquid rapid cooling technology was used to produce 6.5Si-Fe microcrystalline thin strips, and new varieties such as thinner oriented silicon steel sheets and (100) textured (non oriented) silicon steel sheets were developed.
